The Axis deer inhabits wooded regions of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and in small numbers in Pakistan. The highest numbers of Axis are found in the forest of India where they feed upon tall grass and shrubs.

The American bison is the largest land animal in North America. Bison, or buffalo, are good swimmers and can cross rivers over half a mile (1 km) wide. Bison are nomadic grazers and travel in herds.

The elk is one of the largest species of the deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat, feeding on grasses, plants, leaves, and bark.

Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year. These antlers are collected by our Rangers and are available in our Gift Shop. Males also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut or mating season, including posturing, antler wrestling, and bugling, which attracts females.

It is the second-largest bird in the world by height, after its relative, the ostrich. They may travel long distances to find food and feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food.

The fallow deer was spread across central Europe by the Romans. The species has great variations in the color of their coats, with four main variants. The white is the lightest colored, almost white; common and menil are darker, and melanistic is very dark, sometimes even black.

The unique stripes of zebras make them one of the animals most familiar to people.
